Mentorship Feasiblity Study for the MacEwan University Arts and Cultural Management for Theatre Arts Programs

Project Summary:
This research project explored the potential for a structured mentorship model to enhance the transition from higher education to professional practice in the arts.

The study investigated the feasibility of establishing a mentorship program to support fourth-year students in the Arts and Cultural Management and Music Theatre Performance programs at MacEwan University. The initiative aimed to provide sustained professional guidance during the students’ transition from their final semester into the first year following graduation.

The proposed model paired students with experienced arts managers and performing artists for monthly meetings, offering a forum for professional dialogue, shared learning, and reflective practice. The concept for the program emerged from a think tank discussion with cultural sector managers and administrators, highlighting the need for structured mentorship pathways to bridge academic and professional contexts.

Findings from the study indicated that the mentorships contributed to reciprocal personal and professional development, enhanced scholarly engagement, and improved integration of graduates into the professional workplace.

A pilot program implemented in 2021 demonstrated the viability of the model and its potential to strengthen professional preparedness and sector connectivity for emerging practitioners.
